Road Trip, Part II

Sunday, May 22: The trip started off auspiciously, I think. I had reserved the car at O’Hare since none of the off-airport locations had cars available for one-way rentals. The reservation was for 9 am, which meant that I had to wake up around 6.15 and leave home by 7 am. As it happened, three L trains and a shuttle ride later I walked into the Avis office at 9 am, accurate to the second! My car was a Chevy Impala, a nice big car with lots of trunk space but I was slightly concerned about its fuel efficiency. As it turned out, I needn’t have worried because it came in at thirty-one miles per gallon, well over my budgeted number of twenty-five.

I left from Evanston a little later than I had wanted to, around 1.30 pm. I promptly got lost a few miles out but managed to find my way back onto the I-94 heading north towards Milwaukee and Minneapolis, losing about a half-hour in the process. The weather was absolutely perfect – sunny and a pleasant twenty-five degrees that actually made me a little unwilling to leave Evanston, thinking of all the cycling/tennis/barbecues I would be missing. I think that happens to me before every trip – the last-minute cold feet.

Anyway, I made good time on the road and reached Minneapolis, four hundred and thirty miles later, around 8.30 pm. It was good to see KSE again and I had a nice long eight-hour sleep.
